1 dead, 2 hurt in Sanford shooting

One person was killed and two others are injured after a shooting near a Sanford elementary school Thursday afternoon.

Shots rang out at about 1:40 p.m. on 18th Street near South Strawberry Avenue — less than two blocks from Goldsboro Elementary Magnet School.

Police arrested two people they think were responsible for the deadly shooting. Their names were not immediately released.

A motive for the shooting has not been revealed, but Capt. James McAuliffe, spokesman for the Sanford Police Department, said the victims were not chosen at random.

One shooting victim died on scene, a second victim is still alive but collapsed on 18th Street and a third victim, despite being shot in the back, fled toward the elementary school, prompting a short lockdown.

The names of the victims have not been released.

A .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun and an assault rifle were recovered from the scene.
